About ESRI Shapefile (SHP)

The long-standing GIS interchange workhorse. A "file" is really a bundle: .shp geometry, .dbf attributes, .shx index and .prj coordinate system — keep them together (or zip them).

Worth knowing: One geometry type per layer; attribute names truncated to 10 characters; 2 GB size ceiling.

About MicroStation DGN (DGN)

Bentley MicroStation design files (v7). Common in civil and infrastructure work.

Worth knowing: V7 only in-browser; like all CAD, no CRS metadata — assign the source CRS.
